Keeping Your Car Clean is Easy With These Simple Tips

You’ve just finished all of the classes at your local driving school in Gresham. You know how to drive safely and securely on the road. But that’s not why your friends are hesitating to get in your car when you offer them a ride. Instead, it might be that your car’s interior is something akin to a pig stye.

It might seem like something simple to do, but it’s surprising how quickly the cleanliness of your car can get away from you if you aren’t diligent about it. Here at Pacific Driver Education, we work with drivers of all skill levels, and levels of cleanliness. That’s why we put together this quick guide on keeping your car looking its best.

Why Should a Clean Car Matter to You?

It’s been found that the average American spends about 101 minutes behind the wheel every day. That’s a lot of time to be spending in a relatively enclosed space. That’s why it’s important to keep your car clean as much as you can. After all, a car that’s filled with trash, dirt, and dust can actually have a negative impact on your health. Wiping down your steering wheel and dash surfaces, as well as vacuuming your seats and floors help to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria that can leave you feeling ill.

If nothing else, a clean car is a welcoming car. When your car is clean, your friends and family won’t hesitate to hop in for a ride, be it across town, or across the country. Plus, keeping your car clean is pretty easy. Here’s how:

Clean Up Your Cup Holders

If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your cup holders, it’s probably because you’ve never done it. These spaces collect dirt, grime, and sticky substances faster than most other places within your car. Keeping them looking good as new is pretty straightforward.

You can make a simple cleaning solution by using water and vinegar. To make sure you’re getting into all of the crevices of your cup holders, soak a few cotton swabs in the solution. The swab can be used to get to those hard-to-reach areas. Once they’re looking good, you can keep them that way you can put a cupcake liner in the holder. This catches all of the crumbs, dirt, and liquids that make their way to the bottom of your cup holders. Replace them every few weeks, and you’re good to go!

Make Organization a Priority

We’ve all got that friend who uses the backseat of their car as an extension of their closet. It’s a mess back there! Whether it’s an extra hoody, a pair of jumper cables, a loose can of fix-a-flat, or toys and trash, our cars get full fast if left unchecked. Instead of letting these things roll around your car haphazardly, you should take a few minutes to straighten them out. You can use a specialty car caddy from a store, or you can just use a small cardboard box. Either of these options makes it easy to pick up everything in your car and move it quickly if need be. It has the added benefit of helping your car stay clean and tidy.

Put a Car Trash Can in Place

Unless you actually drive a garbage truck, there’s no reason for your car to look like one. Even then, most garbage truck drivers we know are pretty cleanly. Instead of letting trash collect in your car, you can make use of any number of options for a trash receptacle. If you’re looking for a cheap and easy option, put a plastic grocery store bag in one of your side panel storage pockets. You can also hang it behind one of the headrests for the front seats. You can also go look for a pop-up trash can that is designed to fit nicely inside your car. These often have a closing lid, which keeps trash from flying out of it when you take a turn a little tighter than you intended too.

The real trick to having an in-car trash can, however, is to be diligent about clearing it out. After all, if you’re good about putting your trash in there, but then never actually getting the trash out of the car, you haven’t made any progress.

Don’t Forget the Spaces Between the Seats

The space between your seats can seem like some sort of endless void from your favorite science fiction film. We’ve all felt our hearts drop when we accidentally drop our credit cards, phones, change, or even keys into this endless abyss, and then struggled to get them back again. More than just valuable items, trash, crumbs, and other gradoo builds up in these spaces.

Fortunately, you can keep these spaces clean, and protect your items from disappearing pretty easily. Just roll up some cheap towels and stuff them into the opening. As an added benefit, you’ll be able to react to a spill quickly should the need arise.
