Driving School: It’s the Safest Option

On the fence about whether to send your teen to an Oregon drivers education course or just teach them yourself? I get it, the extra expense, time and effort is enough to deter you; but the truth is, in the end it’s all worth it because your teen—and all the other drivers on the road—will be much better off with some professional drivers education under their belt. If you’re in need of a little convincing, let me share some stats from the Oregon DMV data records division with you…

The DMV took a look at all the Oregon teen crashes that happened in 2014 and broke them down by age and then even further by those teens who took drivers education and those who did not. Let me tell you, these striking results are chilling.

Car crashes involving 16 year old Oregon Drivers: In 2014 there were 789 crashes involving 16 year olds. Of those accidents, 755 of the teen drivers had not taken a drivers ed course while only 33 of them had.

Car crashes involving 17 year old Oregon Drivers: In 2014 there were 2057 crashes involving 17 year olds. Of those accidents, 2035 of the teen drivers had not taken a drivers ed course while only 22 of them had.

Car crashes involving 18 year old Oregon Drivers: In 2014 there were 4286 crashes involving 18 year olds. Of those accidents, 4272 of the teen drivers had not taken a drivers ed course while only 14 of them had.

Car crashes involving 19 year old Oregon Drivers: In 2014 there were 5467 crashes involving 19 year olds. Of those accidents, 5319 of the teen drivers had not taken a drivers ed course while zero of them had.

Car crashes involving 20 year old Oregon Drivers: In 2014 there were 6070 crashes involving 20 year olds. Of those accidents 4371 of the drivers had not taken a drivers ed course while zero of them had.

Now there were some crashes that did not have the identifier for either driversed educated or non-drivers ed educated, but even with those scant unknown variables the numbers are staggering; especially when you look at the number of—or lack thereof—19 and 20 year olds who took lessons and were involved in accidents.

These statistics are proof positive that all of us are much better off when teens take professional drivers education before they hit the roadways.
